Fullcourt Press All-West Camp: Day 2
by Dinos Trigonis
(July 11, 2007)
Things heated up on the 2nd day of the Fullcourt Press All-West Camp as several late arrivals and the increased intensity of the games helped enhance the competitive environment of the camp. Colleges on hand today included UCLA, USC (with head coach Tim Floyd), Arizona, Kentucky, Washington, Arizona State (with head coach Herb Sendek), Cal, Washington State, Colorado, Iowa State, Boston College, Oregon State, Gonzaga, Wyoming, San Diego State, Utah, UNLV, Colorado State, UTEP, Nevada, Idaho (including head coach George Pfeifer), Boise State (including head coach Greg Graham), Fresno State, Long Beach State (including head coach Dan Monson), UC-Irvine, Pacific, UC-Santa Barbara (including head coach Bob Williams), Pepperdine, Santa Clara (including head coach Kerry Keating), Cal State Fullerton, Northern Arizona, Portland, Cal State Northridge (including head coach Bobby Braswell), UC-Riverside, San Francisco, San Diego, Loyola Marymount (including head coach Rodney Tention), Saint Mary’s, UC-Davis, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Portland State, Texas-Arlington, Columbia, Denver, American, Hartford and Bucknell as well as scouts like Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press), Joel Francisco (ESPN), Greg Hicks (Scouthoops.com) and Etop Udo-Ema (Fullcourt Press & Hoopmasters).
We talked about several standouts yesterday. The following prospects are additional players that stoodout on Day 2:
DeMar DeRozan 6’6” 2008 Compton (Compton CA)
After a dazzling performance at the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron OH, DeRozan made an appearance at the camp and did not disappoint as his array of NBA-style jump shots and athletic above-the rim plays had center court buzzing. DeMar has definitely arrived at Top 10 national status and could be ascending higher if he keeps knocking down that text-book jump shot with the regularity we are currently seeing.
Renaldo Woolridge 6’8” 2008 Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)
Fresh off a 17 point (on 7/8 shooting) performance at the Reebok U top all-star game in Philadelphia, Woolridge is now receiving serious national attention and backing up all the hype we have given him all year long. Other than DeRozan, there may not be another West Coast 2008 prospect with more upside.
Jordan Hamilton 6’7” 2009 Dominguez (Compton CA)
Another LeBron James Skills Academy participant who arrived late, Hamilton is the quintessential pure scorer that can produce points in a multitude of ways and whose all-around game is also underrated.
Top 15 national 2009 prospect has a long list of colleges eager to incorporate his offensive skills into their team offense.
Jacob Ranger 6’5” 2008 Carpinteria (Carpinteria CA)
Strong and athletic swingman had his jump shot on target today! WCC and Big West interest brewing.
Larry Anderson 6’5” 2007 Jordan (Long Beach CA)
Bouncy small-forward attacks the rim like a kamikaze and defends with energy. Looking at the option of prep school.
Robert Smith 6’0” 2009 Perris (Perris CA)
Very underrated national PG prospect is a crafty scorer with a nice motor as many programs outside the West are slowly noticing.
Aaron Hawk-Harris 6’5” 2008 Palisades (Los Angeles CA)
Physical wing can really slash to score and has the strength to rebound with post players inside.
Devonte Elliott 6’7” 2009 Paramount (Paramount CA)
Very long forward is just a young buck and is barely scratching the surface of his immense potential.
Xavier Howard 6’5” 2008 Smokey Hill (Aurora CO)
Athletic wing with much bounce has serious mid-major potential.
Trevor Hopkins 5’11” 2008 San Marcos (Santa Barbara CA)
Savvy point handles the rock with confidence and has a nice looking perimeter stroke.
James Dean 6’3” 2008 Hargrave Military (Chatham VA)
Hard-working wing has nice ability to beat defenders off the dribble. The Las Vegas native’s 4.75 GPA is not too shabby either.
D’Sean Anderson 6’6” 2009 Inglewood (Inglewood CA)
Anderson is an intriguing small forward that can really score and whose game is starting to grow on me.
Tyler Gage 6’3” 2008 Salpointe (Tucson AZ)
Gage (an excellent student) has long been known as a shooter, but showed today an ability to be an effective slashing scorer as well.
Michael Salazar 5’11” 2008 Springville (Springville UT)
Heady point has a high basketball IQ and sets the table well for teammates.
D’Angelo Scott 6’6” 2009 Lynwood (Lynwood CA)
Rapidly improving swing forward is a rising junior worth keeping an eye on.
Taylor Shipley 6’0” 2008 Palisades (Los Angeles CA)
Savvy lead guard is a fine passer.
Bryce Cartwright 6’0” 2008 Dominguez (Compton CA)
Scrappy combo-guard has a knack for scoring.
Tre Brewer 6’4” 2008 Etiwanda (Etiwanda CA)
Alta Loma transfer is an athletic wing that is an exceptional slashing scorer.
Caspar Ware 5’9” 2008 Gahr (Cerritos CA)
Small but gutsy point plays great defense and can really knock down perimeter shots.
Da’Shawn Gomez 6’0” 2009 Inglewood (Inglewood CA)
Multi-purpose guard seems like he is involved in every play at both ends.
Rome Draper 6’5” 2009 Etiwanda (Etiwanda CA)
Big wing is a sharp-shooter with nice perimeter range.
Anthony Brown 6’3” 2010 Ocean View (Huntington Beach CA)
Skilled guard needs to add strength but has real potential to be a top prospect in this class.
Avery Johnson 6’3” 2010 Ocean View (Huntington Beach CA)
Long and athletic wing defends with intensity. Forms with HS teammate Anthony Brown one of the top up and coming young high school back-courts in the West.
