2007 Fullcourt Press Spring Showcase Report: Juniors
By Dinos Trigonis
(May 14, 2007)

The annual Fullcourt Press Spring Showcase was held recently and as was the case with previous editions, there was no shortage of talent and offense.  Four classes (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011) were on hand and they gave us plenty of preview of both the present and future.  In this report, I will focus on the juniors (Class of 2009) that participated.

Demar DeRozan      6’6”      Jr.      Compton
(Compton CA)

DeRozan was a liitle late arriving for this game (his HS team’s spring league game ended later than expected) but he wasted little time in showing why he is among the most electrifying players in the nation – scoring 25 points on 11/17 shooting (including several ESPN Sports Center-caliber dunks).  DeRozan’s ultra athleticsm often overshadows his impressive skill set which includes an accurate perimeter shot, pin-point passing ability (had 4 assists) and an improving handle.

Renaldo Woolridge    6’8”   Jr.   Harvard-Westlake
(North Hollywood CA)

Woolridge continues to evolve as a high-major prospect and showed here why he is continuing to earn the respect of national recruiting sources (Rivals #61, Hoopmasters #66, Hoop Scoop #85 and Scout #98).  Renaldo had a game-high 31 points here to go along with 7 boards and 5 assists (and he committed just 1 turnover).  Although Woolridge has been known as a big wing that can shoot the perimeter shot, what impressed us here was his inclination to not settle for the “three” and attack the basket with authority for high percentage shots which resulted in Woolridge shooting 56% from the field in this game.  Additionally he displayed improved passing skills (5 assists) and defense which are attributes in his game that should continue to develop and make him of the nation’s most intriguing prospects this July.

Charles Odum      6’1”     Jr.     St. John Bosco
(Bellflower CA)

Odum was a major revelation at this very same event last year and if his year-to-year improvement is any indication, the athletic Odum will receive lots of D-I attention this July.  Although Odum does not have a “true” perimeter position, make no mistake about it – he is a “player” as his 30 point/13 rebound/6 assist performance here attests.  Reminds me a lot of 2007 Big West Player of the Year Aaron Nixon (Long Beach State).

Keion Bell   6’2”   Jr.  Pasadena (Pasadena CA)

Athletic combo-guard showed why he is one of the most underrated West Coast Class of 2008 prospects here by putting up a remarkable triple double (19 points/13 boards/15 assists).  Although Bell does need to improve his efficiency with the ball (11 turnovers), he does make

big plays at both ends and is an excellent defender (recorded 3 steals).

Edgar Garibay             6’10”    Jr.        Compton (Compton CA)

Like DeRozan, Garibay arrived late and the big center did not have one of his best games, but he still managed to be productive (14 points/7boards).  Edgar is one of the West Coast’s top center prospects due to his combination of size and shooting ability.  With hard work and a recognition that he needs to improve his attitude, Garibay will be on the “watch” list of programs looking for a center this July.

Jason Pruitt                 6’1”      Jr.        View Park (Los Angeles CA)

Younger brother of USC star Gabriel Pruitt, Jason had a great HS season (leading team to state finals) and showed here why he could very well be a hot commodity this July as a lead guard (14 points/12 assists). Very undervalued as a prospect at the moment, there are few peers in the West that match his ability to beat defenders off the dribble.

Bryce Cartwright          6’2”      Jr.        Dominguez (Compton CA)

At this time in the recruiting calendar, “sleepers” start to make their move up the rankings and it appears that Cartwright may very well be in that category.  Late-blooming combo-guard has above-average handle and is an excellent defender.  Bryce was impressive here as his near triple-double (16 points/9 boards/7 assists) showed.

Michael Bostic             6’7”      Jr.        Colony (Ontario CA)

Very long-armed post-forward has nice rebounding instincts and shotblocking timing.  One of the West Coast’s top Class of 2008 interior sleepers, Bostic had 17 points/8 boards here.

Jaime Serna                6’7”      Jr.        Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Magarita CA)

Agile forward is active in the paint and has ability to finish in traffic (12 points/6 boards here).

Oscar Bellfield             6’3”      Jr.        Westchester (Los Angeles CA)

Crafty lead guard is athletic and an excellent defender.  Very nice high-major upside!

Jamal Trice                 6’4”      Jr.        Mater Dei (Santa Ana CA)

Strong wing is an underrated outside shooter (had 16 points here) and is one of SoCal’s top defenders.

Terrell Chandler          6’8”      Jr.        Pacific Hills (Los Angeles CA)

One of the surprises of the event, Chandler is a strong power-forward with size as well as possessing one of the top physiques in this class.  Very good rebounder has mid-major potential.

Quamaine Crymes       6’4”      Jr.        Joel John (Los Angeles CA)

Strong wing is athletic and crafty in transition (had 12 points here).

Julius Von Hanzlik       6’4”      Jr.        Beverly Hills
(Beverly Hills CA)

Normally sharp-shooting wing had an off-night here, but his timing has been off recently due to nagging ankle injuries and should regain his form come July.

Vernon Davis               6’5”      Jr.        Loyola
(Los Angeles CA)

Hard-working wing finds ways to score and is an underrated defender.

Wendell Wright           6’5”      Jr.        Mayfair
(Lakewood CA)

Athletic wing is an underrated rebounder (had 7 boards here).

Marcus Johnson           5’11”    Jr.        Joel John
(Los Angeles CA)

Quick point is dangerous in transition and is a pesky defender

Terance Reaves           6’1”      Jr.        Poly (Long Beach CA)

Combo-guard is a nice slashing scorer and a solid defender.

Jason Pancoe              6’3”      Jr.        Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Magarita CA)

Smart lead guard has a nice basketball IQ and can really stroke the perimeter shot.

JR Eko                         6’5”      Jr.        Sonora (La Habra CA)

Strong and athletic small forward can rebound (had 7 boards here).

Keith Thompson          6’5”      Jr.        Downey (Downey CA)

Active and strong combo-forward is productive (13 points/11 boards in Top 40 game here).

Kyle Clark                    6’11”    Jr.        Lakewood (Lakewood CA)

Intriguing center with size is still raw but is very mobile and showed here that he has improved (had 8 points/11 boards in Top 40 Game) and is a prospect worthy of being monitored closely this July by low-major, D-II and NAIA programs.

Dillon Ratleff                6’2”      Jr.        Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos CA)

Son of former Long Beach State All-American, Houston Rocket and USA Olympian Ed Ratleff is an improving lefty combo-guard with a soft touch on his jump shot and a solid defender.

George Quay Fields     5’11”    Jr.        King (Riverside CA)

Very good ballhandler can score (had 10 points in Top 40 Game) and is very difficult to contain off the dribble.

Renell Gary                 6’4”      Jr.        Jordan (Long Beach CA)

Skilled wing with size has intriguing upside.

Dan Ricard                   6’5”      Jr.        Agoura (Agoura CA)

Savvy combo-forward can rebound (6 boards in Top 40 Game here) and has nice scoring instincts.

Alex Lopez                  6’1”      Jr.        Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos CA)

Combo-guard has a legitimate 3-point stroke and was game-high scorer in Top 40 Game (17 points).

Marquis Anderson        6’6”      Jr.        Poly (Long Beach CA)

Burly forward is active on the glass.

Jonathan Jeannis        5’8”      Jr.        Esperanza (Anaheim CA)

Small, but tough point handles pressure well.

Bennett Shaw              5’10”    Jr.        Etiwanda (Etiwanda CA)

Quick PG has nice handle.

Benjamin Ates             6’0”      Jr.        Muir (Pasadena CA)

Very good defender can also score.

Justin Brown                6’0”      Jr.        Loara (Anaheim CA)

Smart lead guard compliments teammates well.

Kenneth Jones             6’0”      Jr.        St. Bernard (Playa del Rey CA)

Scoring combo-guard has nice ability to get to the basket.

Webb Massey              6’0”      Jr.        Woodcrest Christian (Riverside CA)

Very good passer had 6 assists in Top 40 Game here.

Antoine Heard             6’0”      Jr.        Jordan (Long Beach CA)

Quick ballhandler plays solid defense.

Arman Brown              6’1”      Jr.        Esperanza (Anaheim CA)

“Tough-as nails” lead guard is a solid passer.

Cerebral combo-guard works hard on the defensive end.

Eric Dunn                     6’1”      Jr.        Hoover (Fresno CA)

Combo-guard can really score off the dribble and is an underrated defender.

Justin McCurdy            6’1”      Jr.        Redondo Union (Redondo Beach CA)

Dependable ballhandler has nice pull-up jumper (made 2/3 “threes” in Top 40 Game).

Dominique Porter-Jenkins  6’2”           Jr.       Poly (Long Beach CA)

Slashing scorer has long arms and is a pesky defender.
