West Coast Talent Runs Deep at the 2006 Fullcourt Press All-Frosh/Soph Camp

The 6th annual Fullcourt Press All-Frosh/Soph Camp was held at the SCBA Center (Cypress CA) this past weekend (October 28-29), featuring 130-plus top 2009 and 2010 players from California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Washington, Minnesota and Oklahoma.  The camp began with a terrific dynamic agility and skills workout presented by Joe Abunnasar and Dan Barton (Abunassar Total Impact) and the Athletes Performance staff and continued with four competitive rounds of games which showcased the depth of the young talent present.

 

Media/scouts present included event director Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press), event director Etop Udo-Ema (Fullcourt Press & Hoopmasters), Frank Burlison (Long Beach Press-Telegram & Scouthoops.com), Ronnie Flores (Student Sports Magazine), Greg Hicks (Scouthoops.com), Joel Francisco (SoCal’s Finest Recruiting Service & ESPN.com), Dave Keefer & Dave Rogahn (CaliforniaPreps.com), Lee Hubbard (NorCalPreps.com), Dave Nahabedian (Networx) and Nick Koza (Sportsamp.com).  Also on hand watching was Nike All-American Camp director Sherman Dillard.

 

Players that were selected to the two top camp games held at the conclusion of the event include the following (listed by numerical jersey number):

Top 22 Cream of the Crop Game

 

3          Kylel Coleman             5'11"     So.       Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas NV)

Very athletic combo-guard is an excellent slashing scorer and exciting finisher.

 

39         Deronn Scott                            6’0”      So.       Etiwanda (Etiwanda CA)

Underrated lead guard was impressive most of weekend, displaying nice savvy and court vision.

 

53         Christopher Harriel                  6’3”      So.       Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley CA)

Bouncy and athletic wing can really elevate.  Long arms and lateral quickness permit him to be a pressuring fullcourt defender.   Scored 13 points in top game.

 

66         Chase Tapley                           6’3”      So.       Sacramento (Sacramento CA)

Aggressive wing player with energy plays excellent defense!   Exceptional slashing scorer can really get to the basket off the dribble.  Top 25 game stat line: 18 points/9 boards/5 steals.  One to track in this class!

67         Anthony Marshall                     6’2”      So.       Mojave (Las Vegas NV)

Marshall had a West Coast coming-out party this weekend, showing scouts what the Fullcourt Press has known since last August – this kid can flat out play!  Terrific ballhandler is a strong and aggressive penetrator and finisher.  Underrated outside shooter competes on every play.  Solid student (3.2 GPA) impressed us in top game by having 14 points/8 boards.

 

70         Kendall Williams                     6’1”      Fr.        Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga CA)

Smooth lead guard makes good decisions and always plays with poise rare in young playmakers.  Williams has a nice mid-range game with long arms that give him the potential to be a harassing defender.  Had 11 points/5 assists in top game.

116       Darius Morris                           6’1”      So.       Windward (Los Angeles CA)

Crafty point with nice upside did not have one of his best weekends, but he is one of the finest passers in the West regardless of class as well as an excellent student (3.5 GPA).   Had 15 points/5 assists in top game here. 

 

129       Cameron Bailey                       6’3”      So.       Fairfax (Los Angeles CA)

Strong and athletic wing makes plays at both ends of the floor.  One of the surprises of the camp is a West Coast sleeper in this class.  Had 12 points/5 boards in top game.

 

164       Jordan Mackie                         6’3”      So.       Dorsey (Los Angeles CA)

One of the revelations of the camp, Mackie showed very nice potential to evolve into a top-notch 2009 wing prospect.  While he was scoreless in the top all-star game, he did show the ability to find open teammates (6 assists) and play pressure defense.

 

166       Justin Cobb                              6’0”      So.       Bishop Montgomery (Torrance CA)

Cerebral PG has a rock solid handle and knows how to run a team.  Underrated scorer played well in top game here (15 points/9 boards).

168       Tyler Lamb                              6’5”      Fr.        Colony (Ontario CA)

Lamb is a big time frosh scoring wing prospect – had 13 points/8 boards in top game.  Great work ethic and attitude and improving athleticism make him one freshman to keep both eyes on.

 

181       Jordan Finn                             6’4”      So.       Etiwanda (Etiwanda CA) 

Finn has a very nice feel for the game and excellent scoring stroke.  Underrated rebounder too (had 9 rebounds in top game).   Very good student (3.25 GPA) should have a few inches left (dad John is 6’7”).

 

185       Clinton Bozner             6’6”      Fr.        Villa Park (Villa Park CA)

Emerging young scorer has improved the range on his jump shot and is now a legitimate D-I combo-forward prospect.

192       Gary Franklin                           6’1”      Fr.        Mater Dei (Santa Ana CA)

Young, but very talented lead guard can really stroke the 3-point shot.   Terrific defender anticipates well and makes big plays at both ends of the floor.

 

209       Daniel Orton                            6’10”    So.       Bishop McGuinness (Oklahoma City OK)

Excellent center prospect does not only take care of business inside, but showed flashes of a perimeter stroke as well.  Elite major prospect has big time body!

 

240       Stephen Heard                        6’5”      So.       Jordan (Long Beach CA)

Underrated swingman runs floor well and is an athletic slashing scorer.  Potential is intriguing.

 

242       Jordan Hamilton                      6’7”      So.       Dorsey (Los Angeles CA)

Skilled wing forward with a very nice national rep (ranked #9 in the nation by Scouthoops.com), showed off his versatile skills here (had 33 points/9 boards/4 assists in Top 25 game – making him the game’s unofficial MVP).

 

243       Terran Carter                           6’4”      So.       Taft (Woodland Hills CA)

Physical defender is an excellent rebounder and underrated scorer.

 

244       Joe Burton                               6’8”      So.       West Valley (Hemet CA)

Wide-body post is more nimble than you think and has a very nice feel for the game.  Possessing a soft touch along with a knack for the ball make him a dangerous inside scoring threat. 

 

248       Travis Wear                             6’9”      So.       Mater Dei (Santa Ana CA)

Along with twin brother Dave, Hamilton and Orton, one of the top four prospects here.  Travis is a multi-skilled player that has a skill package extremely rare in somebody his age, grade and size.  With continued hard-work and the right attitude, the sky is the limit for this dangerous post/perimeter offensive threat.

 

252       Craig Payne                             6’4”      So.       Etiwanda (Etiwanda CA)

Excellent two-sport athlete (also a fine football prospect) showed that he could knock down perimeter shots here with regularity.  Payne’s scoring confidence was apparent in the top game here as he poured in 23 points (4 “threes”) to go along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

 

254       Xavier Thames                        6’3”      So.       Pleasant Grove (Sacramento CA)

Athletic and strong off-guard has a reputation as big-time scorer and while he did not explode offensively here as he has in other venues, “X” did show flashes of the skills that make him a standout wing prospect in this class.

 

258       Dave Wear                               6’9”      So.       Mater Dei (Santa Ana CA) 

While brother Travis, gets a tad more respect from most scouts and media, Dave has as much talent and the same potential to be a special elite player.  Dave has the skills and agility to play at least three (and maybe four) positions with legitimate range to the 3-point arc as well as impressive back-to-the basket moves.   Advanced footwork and passion for the game make him a coveted recruit.

 

262       Justin Hawkins             6’2”      So.       Taft (Woodland Hills CA)

Productive and wise combo-guard has a nose for the ball and the court instincts to consistently make the “right” decision.  Terrific defender holds his own in the classroom too (3.2 GPA).  Had 12 points/7 boards/5 assists in top game here.

 

280       Chris Cunningham                   6’9”      So.       Diamond Ranch (Diamond Bar CA)

Very improved post-player displayed a nice touch around the basket (including the ability to finish with either hand).  Outstanding student is a formidable rebounder and shotblocker too.  Uncle played at Stanford in the late 1980’s.  Had 10 points (on 5/6 shooting) and 8 boards in top game here.

 

298       Deonta Burton             5’10”    Fr.        Cabrillo (Long Beach CA)

Strong and physical guard is a tenacious defender and legitimate national point guard sleeper.  Burton pushes the rock with confidence and speed and is a real threat in transition.

 

299     Daren Dickson                           6’4”      So.       Sierra (Colorado Springs CO)

Athletic wing is a sleeper in this national class and perhaps Colorado’s top 2009 prospect.  Scored 8 points and had an impressive 7 blocked shots in top game.  Solid student too (3.0 GPA).

00         Isiah Roy                                  5’10”    So.       San Diego (San Diego CA)

Solid ballhandler and defender makes sound decisions.

 

17         Nick Paulson                            5’10”    Fr.        La Sierra (Riverside CA)

Tough little guard has a nice stroke from the 3-point arc.

 

45         Jeff Jefferson               5’11”    So.       Brethren Christian (Huntington Beach CA)

Improved ballhandler and passer is a very good student (3.5 GPA).

 

49         Christian Mack             6’1”      So.       Valencia (Placentia CA)

Athletic defender showed well here.

 

54         Jamal Ford                              6’3”      Fr.        Berkeley (Berkeley CA)

Quick and fluid wing has a nice offensive skill package.  Very promising prospect.

62         Kris Bennett                             6'8"      So.       Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas NV)

Agile big man is still raw but is active on both ends of the floor.   Solid student (3.0 GPA).

 

73         Jonathan  Loyd                        5'8"      Fr.        Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas NV)

Speedy point is a very good passer (had 6 assists in this game).  Father Michael played at UNLV.

 

77         Travis Sims                              6’5”      So.       San Leandro (San Leandro CA)

Strong forward has wide shoulders and a knack for getting to the free-throw line.  Had 11 points and a game high 8 boards here.

 

79         Tim Chung                               6’3”      Fr.        Fairmont (Anaheim CA)

Outstanding shooter has huge basketball IQ.  Terrific student (4.0 GPA).

94         Milos Knezevic                        6’6”      So.       Liberty (Henderson NV)

Very skilled combo-forward has an accurate perimeter stroke that extends to the three-point line.  Very good student.

 

96         Keith Miller                              6’4”      Fr.        Ribet Academy (Los Angeles CA)

Intriguing southpaw can really score and has a big upside.  Underrated ballhandler and passer had 10 points/5 boards/3 steals in Top 50 game.

 

99         Nick Kaspar                             6’4”      Fr.        Dana Hills (Dana Point CA)

Strong and athletic freshman wing forward has nice scoring skills and is one to track in this class.

120       Trent Lockett                           6’3”      So.       Hopkins (Minnetonka MN)

Skilled and smooth wing had a game-high 17 points (along with 7 boards) in Top 50 game.

 

134       Marek La Gorce-Ross   6’3”      Fr.        Crossroads (Santa Monica CA)

While Marek doesn’t get the acclaim of other top SoCal freshmen, he is a versatile guard that improved substantially over the summer and will be a focal point for new Crossroads coach Kevin Brown in his freshman season.

 

141       Adam Eackles              6’6”      So.       Woodland (Woodland CA)

Active and agile forward has real scoring talent as he showed in the Top 50 game – 14 points/5 rebounds along with 4 block shots.

 

147       Joe Slocum                             6’0”      Fr.        Sacred Heart (San Francisco CA)

Frosh lead guard sees the floor well and handles the ball adeptly.

 

149       Aalim Moor III                          6’2”      So.       St Mary's (Berkeley CA)

Sleek playmaker has steady handle and the ability to make pin-point passes.

 

152       Desmond Simmons                  6’5”      Fr.        Salesian (Richmond CA)

Very active athlete is an impressive slashing scorer and is a tough defender.  Terrific freshman prospect!   Good student too (3.1 GPA).

 

156       Ryan Farrell                             6’3”      So.       Villa Park (Villa Park CA)

Sharp-shooting wing is also a strong finisher off the dribble.

 

188       Rodney Black              6’5”      So.       Valley View (Moreno Valley CA)

Intriguing swingman finished well in transition and has a very nice upside.

 

195       Brandon Smith                        5’11”    So.       De La Salle (Concord CA)

True point has nice court instincts and runs his squad effectively.

 

196       Robert Allen                            6’1”      So.       Crossroads (Santa Monica CA)

Polished point has improved and is an underrated prospect (13 points/3 assists/3 steals here).

 

198       Eric Lawton                             6’0”      So.       West Valley (Hemet CA)

Athletic combo-guard exhibited a very nice all-around game (had 13 points/5 rebounds/4 assists and 7 steals in a winning effort in the Top 50 game).

 

218       Matthew Nash              6’8”      So.       Nogales (Nogales AZ)

Physical post rebounds well and is a very good student (3.5 GPA).

 

231       Max Pitts                                  6’4”      So.       De La Salle (Concord CA)

Scrappy wing is a Nick Robinson-look-a-like (former Stanford player) with a nice array of offensive moves (had 10 points in the Top 50 game).

 

250       Cole Carter                              6’7”      So.       St. Augustine (San Diego CA)

Aggressive banger down low has nice mobility and can finish on the block.

 

294       Alex Osborne               6’6”      So.       Pacific Hills (Los Angeles CA)

Raw but athletic power forward has nice potential.
