Irvine Valley College Classic
Congratulations to Ventura College who beat Long Beach City College in the finals of the Irvine Valley College Classic. 6'2" Charles Dillon led the way scoring 32 points in only his 2nd game back from football. Dillon is being heavily recruited by all of the schools in the PAC 10 for football.
Here is how we rated the top players in the tournament.....
1. Dewayne Green 5'11" Mt San Jacinto
Big time point guard who can really score when needed. Signed with Southern Miss of Conference USA. How about this line for a point guard; 24 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists. That is what he had in the 3rd place game. The night before he had 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. One of the top point guards in the state and possibly one of the most underrated in the country. Soph.
2. Chris Fields 6'5" Long Beach City
Wing guard who can really stroke it when he gets hot. Probably the best scorer in the tournament with 32 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists in the semifinals and 23 points and 8 rebounds in their loss in the finals. Soph.
3. Danny Tavares 6'8" Ventura
Solid power forward who averaged a big double-double to help Ventura capture the tournament title. Can go inside and outside. Bronx native. Frosh.
4. Brandon Ivery 6'8" Cerritos
Another solid power forward who justs gets a lot done on the interior. Very active averaging 16 points and 14 rebounds. Along with Tavares one of the best freshman power forward prospects in the state. Originally from Columbus, OH. Frosh.
5. Charles Dillon 6'2" Ventura
He could be much higher on this list but but since it doesn't matter since he will be playing football we will list him here. Pro football player that could also play division 1 basketball in the PAC 10 as a role player ala Tony Gonzales at CAL years ago. Big time athlete who can do it all from the perimeter. Currently top 5 in the state in scoring at 24 per game and that is without any practices (just finished football last week). Pretty scary! Soph.
6. Demetrius Hazel 6'6" Long Beach City
He has been up and down his whole career but this weekend he showed the promise many coaches have been looking for. In the semifinals had a 29 point outburst on 6 for 9 from behind the arc to go along with 8 rebounds. In the finals he came back with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was very aggressive offensively attacking the rim and looking for scoring opportunities which he hasn't done consistently in the past. Soph.
7. Marcus Sikes 6'8" Mt San Jacinto
Transfer from Georgia. Big body who is skilled on the post and perimeter. Very inconsistent and doesn't get it done all of the time. Still will have many big time college suitors with lack of size available. Really needs to work on getting things done every night especially at this level. Soph.
8. Pearson Smith 6'2" Long Beach City
Super tough and competitive combo guard who is the glue of his team. Left handed guard who runs the point and can also score if needed. Big time defender whose strong frame allows him to really lock down on D. More than adequate 3 point shooter as well. Soph.
9. Tyler Gottstein 6'4" Irvine Valley
Multi talented combo guard who can really score. Can shoot the deep 3 or drive to the hole. One of the best players in the San Jacinto tournament a week before.
10. Jameson Francisco 6'3" Cuyamaca (San Diego)
Tough combo guard who just finds ways to score. Hit crucial clutch baskets all tournament long for his team. Can shoot the jumpshot or get the basket. Very crafty. One of the leading scorers in the tournament as well with 26 in the first game and 24 the next night.
